WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Codi Miller-McIntyre scored 21 points, including 14 in a row in the second half, to lead Wake Forest past Colgate 89-78 in the 2013-14 season opener Friday at Joel Coliseum.
The Raiders (0-1) had led by as many as eight points in the second half and held a three-point lead when Miller-McIntyre, who had started the game but not the second half, came off the bench to spark the Demon Deacons (1-0) by scoring their next 14 points.
By the end of that stretch Wake Forest (1-0) led 62-57 and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Devin Thomas also turned in a strong game for the Demon Deacons, leading all players with 23 points - two shy of a career-high - while also pulling down six boards. Travis McKie joined Thomas and Miller-McIntyre in double figures, totaling 14 points in addition to leading the Deacs with seven rebounds. Miller-McIntyre also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists.
While Wake Forest turned in a solid first half, the Deacs fell victim to hot 3-point shooting by Colgate as the Raiders made nine first-half 3-pointers to hold a 40-38 halftime lead.
But Colgate's shots would not fall as often in the second half and Wake Forest's would as the Deacs shot 51.7 percent in the final period to earn the victory.
Fifth-year transfer Coron Williams helped Wake Forest close out the win in his Demon Deacon debut, scoring all eight of his points in the final six minutes, including a 6-of-7 performance from the free throw line. Madison Jones also chipped in eight points, three assists and two steals for the Deacs.
Colgate used a balanced scoring effort with six players reaching double figures, led by Pat Moore's 17 points.
The Raiders jumped out of the gate early, knocking down three 3-pointers in the first six minutes to take a 13-8 lead. The Deacons rallied back with a 7-0 run sparked by a Devin Thomas layup to go in front 25-21 midway through the period, but minutes later Colgate would hit two 3-pointers to start an 8-0 run that would give the Raiders their largest lead of the half at 34-27.
The Deacs clawed back within striking distance as the first half wore down, cutting the lead to two points on a coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer by Jones. Colgate against came out of the locker room strong, building its lead to 51-43 before Miller-McIntyre brought the Deacs to life.
Wake Forest rattled off a 19-4 run, which included the 14 consecutive points by the sophomore guard, and when the dust cleared the Deacons held their largest lead so far at 62-55. The Deacs extended their lead to double digits on a steal and dunk by Devin Thomas with 4:54 remaining and would not be seriously threatened the rest of the way.
The Demon Deacons will return to action at home next Tuesday, Nov. 12 against VMI at 7 p.m. for the inaugural Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Classic. The Deacons will honor the Joel family at the game and will provide free tickets to all active and veteran military personnel and their families.
