WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's women tennis team will face another weekend doubleheader over the next two days, facing No. 46 Long Beach State on Saturday and Louisville on Sunday with both matches scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
It will be the first time in school history that the Demon Deacons have faced either opponent in women's tennis and should be the first of many meetings to come with future ACC foe Louisville.
Last Time Out
In a match that came down to No. 1 singles, Wake Forest dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to UNCG last Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Center.
Kasey Gardiner kept up her strong start to the season, improving to a perfect 5-0 after another victory at No. 2 singles for the Deacs.
Xue Zhang picked up her second straight victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Annette Rios 6-3, 6-2 to improve her dual match record to 3-2.
This Weekend's Opponents
This will be the first time that Wake Forest has faced either school in dual match competition.
Long Beach State, ranked No. 46 in the nation, has gotten off to a hot 6-1 start, including a 4-0 mark in Big West conference play. In their last time out, the 49ers defeated Hawaii 4-3.
Louisville has also started the 2013 season strongly, posting an 8-2 record. The Cardinals routed Wisconsin 7-0 in their last match.
Wake Forest Storylines
Karen Forman, playing at No. 5 singles, toughed out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 victory last weekend, her first in a three-set match this season.
Kathryn Talbert and Gardiner rediscovered their doubles magic last weekend, picking up an easy 8-2 win in their first completed match since Jan. 26.
That doubles victory was the 94th total win between singles and doubles matches for Talbert, who will be seeking to reach 100 total wins before the end of the season.
Next Up
The Deacs will return to action for a mid-week clash with top-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The match will also serve as the conference opener for the Demon Deacons.
