Deacons Third After Opening Round of Tiger Invitational

OPELIKA, Ala. - Wake Forest senior Evan Beck fired a 2-under 70 on Monday in the opening round of the Tiger Invitational and is just one shot off the lead with two rounds to play.
As a team, the Demon Deacons posted an opening round of 5-over 293 and are tied for third, three shots behind East Carolina. The teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but afternoon rain showers limited play to just 18 holes. The final two rounds will be play on Tuesday.
Beck made a total of five birdies in his round, including three-straight from holes 11-13. The 2-under 70 is Beck's ninth round this season at par or better. He is just one-shot off the lead of South Alabama's Michael Garretson heading into Tuesday.
Junior Thomas Birdsey opened with a 1-over 73 and senior Charlie Harrison posted a 2-over 74. Both players made a pair of birdies in their rounds, including one each on the par-5 14th.
Junior John Varol opened the tournament with a 4-over 76 and Davis Womble carded an 8-over 80. Beau Cutts, who is playing as an individual, also shot an opening round 80.
Play is scheduled to resume at 9:30 a.m. ET Tuesday morning. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
