OPELIKA, Ala. - Wake Forest's Evan Beck notched his third top-5 finish of the year to lead to Demon Deacons on the final day of the Tiger Invitational.
Beck shot rounds of 70-75-76 to finish in fifth place alone at 5-over par. He had a solid round of 70 on Monday but Tuesday was up and down. He made a total of eight birdies over the 36 holes and even held the lead early in the day. But he also had four double bogeys and would finish eight shots behind Chad Ramey of Mississippi State, who played the final 36 holes in 3-under par.
As a team, the Demon Deacons mirrored Beck's day. Over the morning 18, Wake jockeyed in the top-3 and held a brief lead midway through. After a morning round of 303, the Deacs were in third place and just four shots back. But a final round 306 dropped the team to a tie for eighth at 38-over par. Mississippi State carded a final round 9-over 297 and won the team title at 25-over par.
"It was one of those days where we didn't make many putts and just didn't get any momentum," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "It doesn't look like we played any good we didn't hit the ball all that bad. It was tough to get anything going when you don't see the putts fall. It was a long day but I'm not disappointed with how we hit the ball. We'll be better next time out."
Senior Charlie Harrison carded a pair of 76s on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 22nd at 10-over par. Junior Thomas Birdsey had a tough time getting in groove and would post rounds of 78-79 to finish at 14-over and tied for 41st.
Freshman Davis Womble rebounded from an opening round 80 and made two birdies and 25 pars over the 36 holes on Tuesday. He carded rounds of 76-75 and finished one shot behind Birdsey at 15-over. Junior John Varol rounded out the Deacon-five with rounds of 76-81 on Tuesday and finished tied for 50th.
Fellow junior Beau Cutts, who played as an individual this week, carded a pair of 79s on Tuesday and was 22-over par and tied for 67th.
The Deacons will have a little less than two weeks to prepare for the Hootie at Bulls Bay which is an event Wake Forest has had success at in the past. That tournament is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 24.
