WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 28th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will close out its stretch of three straight ACC road matches on Friday when it travels to take on No. 74 Georgia Tech at the Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta at 2 p.m.
The Demon Deacons split their first two ACC matches, beating NC State and falling to Duke to sit at 12-5 (1-1 ACC). The Yellow Jackets are looking for their first ACC win after dropping their first two conference matches 4-3 to Florida State and Miami.
Last Time Out
Wake Forest won five of the six singles matches to come from behind and defeat No. 44 NC State on Sunday at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium in Raleigh, NC.
After dropping the doubles point, the Demon Deacons (12-5, 1-1 ACC) came on strong in singles, winning three matches in straight sets and two others in three sets, including the clinching win by David Hopkins at the No. 1 singles position.
In addition to Hopkins, Amogh Prabhakar, Adam Lee, Jon Ho and Sam Bloom posted singles victories to help the Deacons earn the win.
Kreyman Shooting for the Century Club
Senior Danny Kreyman is still shooting for his 100th-career singles win. Kreyman holds a 99-56 career singles record, including a 24-13 mark this season.
The Long Beach, N.Y. native is trying to become only the fifth player in Wake Forest history to reach the century mark. Cory Parr (114), Todd Paul (107), David Berè (106) and David Loewenthal (101) are the current members of Wake Forest's 100 Club.
In the Rankings
Wake Forest dropped out of the ITA top 25 for the first time in three weeks, falling to No. 28 in this week's rankings. No new individual rankings were released this week, meaning that senior Amogh Prabhakar remains at No. 56 on the singles charts.
Scouting Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets sit at No. 74 in the ITA Rankings with a 7-8 (0-2 ACC) record. The Jackets fell to Florida State and Miami, both by 4-3 scorelines, on the opening weekend of ACC play.
No. 84 Juan Spir represents Georgia Tech in the singles rankings, while Spir and Vikram Hundal form the nation's fourth-ranked doubles team.
Wake Forest to Name Courts After Jim Leighton
Wake Forest will dedicate its six varsity tennis courts to legendary men's tennis coach Jim Leighton in a ceremony that will take place during the Demon Deacon men's tennis team's match against Virginia Tech on April 7 as part of Men's Tennis Alumni and Parent's Weekend.
The varsity courts will be known as the Leighton Courts at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The dedication continues the tradition of honoring Leighton, who coached the Demon Deacons from 1962-84 and is the winningest coach in program history with a 277-172 record. Leighton was posthumously inducted into the Wake Forest University Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
Tennis alumni and parents who are interested in attending the weekend's events can RSVP here or contact Alan Ashworth in the Deacon Club at 336-758-5008 or ashworah@wfu.edu for more information.
