ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Wake Forest senior Evan Beck fired a 1-under par 70 in the opening round of the Navy Spring Invitational on Saturday and is tied for the lead heading into Sunday's final round.
On the strength of Beck's round, the Demon Deacons shot a 12-over 296 and are tied for third with a round to go. Wake trails host Navy and Virginia by just two shots.
"It was an interesting day," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "It was breezy and cool but I thought the guys handled the conditions all right. Evan had one of those up and down rounds where he got off to a good start with a chip-in and then finished strong with a couple of nice pars. I would love to see him go out there and shot a 66 or 67 tomorrow and get a win."
For Beck, this was his 14th round at par or better this season. He is tied with Nick MacLaughlin of Virginia and the duo has a one-shot lead on a pair of players. Beck will be looking for the first victory of his career on Sunday.
Juniors Thomas Birdsey and John Varol each carded rounds of 4-over 75 on Sunday while senior Charlie Harrison chipped-in with a 76 and Beau Cutts carded an 80.
The Demon Deacons are in search of their first team title since winning the Wexford Intercollegiate in February of 2010. This tournament is also the final tune-up for Wake before heading to the ACC Championships next weekend.
The final round is set to begin at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. A complete recap will be posted at the conclusion of the round.
