WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -> After earning its highest ACC finish since 2010, the 24th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will begin play in the 2013 ACC Championship as the tournament's No. 3 seed on Friday at 3 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The Demon Deacons finished the regular season with an 18-7 (7-3 ACC) record, which was good for sole possession of third place in the conference. They will face the winner of the match between No. 6 seed Virginia Tech and No. 11 seed Boston College on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Tickets for the entire tournament are $14 for adults and $10 for youths and students, while single-day passes are $7 for adults and $5 for youths and students. Children age 8 and under will be admitted free. For directions to Cary Tennis Park and more tournament information, visit the ACC Championship homepage.
Last Time Out...
Wake Forest staged an improbable comeback in its last match of the regular season, coming from behind to edge No. 24 Clemson 4-3 on the road despite losing the doubles point and dropping the first set in five of the six singles matches.
Adam Lee won the lone straight-set match of the day for Wake Forest's first point, and Danny Kreyman, Jon Ho and Anthony Delcore all rallied from a set down to win, giving the Deacons a key victory.
Delcore, who was playing in the first ACC singles match of his career, earned a notable victory over Tiger freshman Austin Ansari, who had carried a 15-2 dual match record into the match. His fellow rookie Ho clinched the win, converting his fifth match point to beat Zachary Rigsby at No. 5.
Tournament Time
The ACC Championship returns to Cary Tennis Park for the ninth consecutive year. Wake Forest has found considerable success in Cary, winning at least one match in every edition of the tournament held there.
The Demon Deacons advanced to the semifinals in four straight seasons from 2007-10 and made their only final in 2009.
Wake Forest will have a first-round bye in the tournament for the first time since 2009. Last season, the Demon Deacons were seeded 10th and came from behind to top Clemson in the first round before falling to No. 2 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
The Demon Deacons are 2-0 against Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, beating the Hokies in the 2008 and 2009 quarterfinals. Wake Forest has never faced Boston College in the postseason.
Deacons Finish in Third Place in the ACC
Wake Forest put on a strong showing in the conference season, finishing 7-3 in ACC play to lock up a third-place finish. The Demon Deacons finished in third place for the third time in the last five seasons but the first time since 2010.
Wake Forest is the most improved team in the country from last season by ranking, improving 45 spots from its year-end ranking of No. 69 last year and is also the most improved team in the conference by finish, jumping seven spots from No. 10 to No. 3.
Rankings Roundup
After its win over Clemson on Sunday, Wake Forest moved up one spot to No. 24 in the ITA rankings. The Demon Deacons are ranked in the top 25 heading into the postseason for the first time since 2010.
Wake Forest has two representatives in the ITA singles rankings: No. 78 Amogh Prabhakar and No. 105 Adam Lee. The Demon Deacons top doubles team of Prabhakar and David Hopkins is ranked 48th nationally.
Lee One Win Away From School Record
Adam Lee is only one win away from tying the Wake Forest record for singles wins in a season and will head into Friday's ACC Championship quarterfinal looking to push his name to the top of the charts.
Lee holds a 35-9 singles record this season, putting him one win shy of Derrick Spice's school-record 36 singles wins in 2002. The Auckland, New Zealand native leads all ACC players in singles wins this season.
A junior, Lee holds a 21-2 dual match singles record and is currently riding a nine-match winning streak. He posted the best victory of his career earlier in the season, beating then-No. 16 Mac Styslinger of Virginia to jump into the national singles rankings for the first time. Lee's only two losses of the spring came in a 10-point tiebreak against Alabama's Philippe Tsangarides and in straight sets to Chris Mengel of then-No. 4 Duke.
Career Record Watch
David Hopkins (doubles) and Danny Kreyman (singles) have worked their way into the top 5 of the Wake Forest career wins charts and will look to further improve their positions at this week's ACC Championship.
Hopkins has won 90 doubles matches in his career, which ranks him fourth in Wake Forest history. The senior is two wins away from tying Trent Brandon (2000-03) for third place on the charts.
Kreyman holds 104 career singles victories, which is the fourth most in school history. He is also two wins away from tying for third place, which is currently held by David Bere who won 106 matches between 2000-03. Kreyman has also won 75 doubles matches in his career which ranks him eighth on the school charts.
