WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team has been selected as the No. 14-seed at the NCAA Central Regional which is being played at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course in Norman, Okla. The 54-hole regional is set to get underway on Thursday, May 9, and run through Saturday, May 11.
The top eight teams and two individuals not on those eight teams at the end of 54-holes will advance to the NCAA Championships at University of Georgia Golf Course Athens, Ga., on May 21-24.
ACC-foe Duke is the top-seed in the Central Regional while host Oklahoma is the No. 2-seed. Florida is the No 3-seed, Washington the No. 4 and Arizona State rounds-out the top-5 seeds. The Deacs have gone head-to-head with 10 of the other 23 teams in the region this season and hold a 7-21-1 record against those teams.
Wake Forest has qualified for and has been selected to the NCAA Regionals every year since the NCAA switched to the regional format in 1993. This will be the Demon Deacons' fourth trip to the Central Regional and its first appearance on Oklahoma's Jimmie Austin Golf Course. The last trip to the Central Regional was in 2011 when the Demon Deacons had a thrilling comeback to snag the eighth and final qualifying spot on Notre Dame's Warren Golf Club.
Out of the Demon Deacons' 20 previous appearances at the NCAA Regionals, Wake has advanced on to the NCAA Championships 13 times, including five out of the last seven seasons. Wake Forest won the East Regional in both 1994 and 1995, for its only two regional victories. In both tournaments, the Demon Deacons overcame three-shot deficits on the final day.
The 1994 regional was played in East Lansing, Mich., on the campus of Michigan State. The Deacs used a final round 304 to overtake fellow ACC-rival Duke by five strokes. Stephanie Neill followed her second-place showing at the ACC Championships two weeks earlier with another runner-up finish after rounds of 70-75-74. Sonia Bauer, Laura Philo (Diaz) and Kim Marshall chipped in with 11th, 13th and 14th place finishes, respectively.
In 1995, The Demon Deacons again came from three shots down entering the final round to win its second-straight regional title. Wake carded a final round 297, which was the lowest round of the day. The Deacs were led by Stephanie Neill, who finished third overall with a three-day total of 216. Alexandra Armas finished in a tie for 10th while Laura Philo (Diaz) finished 12th. Wake Forest went on to finish third at the NCAA Championships in 1995, which is the best finish in school history.
The Deacons will be looking to qualify for their 11th NCAA Championship in the last 16 years. The first round of the Central Regional will begin at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, May 5. Wake will be in the first group in the afternoon wave off the first tee beginning at 1:00 p.m., ET. The Deacs are paired with Coastal Carolina and TCU.
