WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest scored four runs in the ninth inning, including a two-run homer by Brett Armour, but the Demon Deacons could not complete the comeback and fell to No. 4 Virginia 9-7 on Monday night at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Wake Forest falls to 17-17 overall and 4-11 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers are now 30-3 overall and 12-3 in conference action.

Trailing 9-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Demon Deacons surged and brought the tying run to the plate. Charlie Morgan and Matt Conway got the rally started with a single and a double, respectively, to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Morgan then scored on a wild pitch and Conway came home when Jack Carey reached first on an error to make the score 9-5.

Then on the first pitch he saw on the night, Armour blasted his third home run of the season over the left center field wall to cut the deficit to two. Mark Rhine was then hit by a pitch, but Kyle Crockett earned his third save of the series and seventh of the season by getting both batters he faced.

Nick Howard earned the win in 7.1 innings of work to move to 4-2. Conway suffered the loss to move to 1-1 on the season.

Morgan was the only Deac to pick up more than one hit, as he went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Austin Stadler went 5.0 innings and allowed just two runs and struck out three before exiting.

Virginia scored one run in the first, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead, but Wake Forest tied the contest with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Demon Deacons had been hitless up to that point, but Evan Stephens broke up the no-hit bid with one out and Andrew Williams on first.

Williams scored when Keniry reached on an error, Pat Blair brought home Stephens on a ground out and Keniry scored on an RBI triple by Morgan.

Virginia broke the game open with three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to take a 9-3 lead before the Demon Deacons comeback in the bottom of the last.

The Cavaliers were led offensively by Joey McCarthy who went 4-for-6 with two homers, four RBIs, a double and three runs scored.

Wake Forest will be right back in action tomorrow when it travels to High Point at 6 p.m.
