Deacons Finish 10th at NCAA East Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round 298 at the NCAA East Regional and finished in 10th place in the 13-team field.
Senior Evan Beck led the team on the weekend as he finished at even-par 216 and tied for 29th. Beck ends a stellar Demon Deacon career with a 73.3 scoring average.
Fellow senior Charlie Harrison and freshman Davis Womble each shot a final round 74 and finished tied for 42nd at 4-over par. Both players made three birdies in their round on Saturday.
Junior Thomas Birdsey made an eagle at the par-5 15th and a closing birdie at the par-5 ninth to post a 1-over 73, which was the lowest round of the day for the Demon Deacons. He finished the tournament at 8-over par and tied for 56th.
Junior John Varol ran into some trouble midway through the round on Saturday and would finish with a 78. He was 13-over par for the 54-holes and tied for 70th.
There was a good battle between the top three teams in the standings, with North Florida coming away with a three-shot victory over Washington. UNF was 34-under for the tournament while Washington was 31-under and host Florida State finished was third at 28-under.
The real race was for the fifth and final qualifying spot. Oklahoma and South Florida finished tied at 10-under par which Oregon State finished at 9-under and Oregon finished at 8-under. Oklahoma then won the tie-breaker with South Florida on the first playoff hole and grabbed the final spot.
The Demon Deacons carded rounds of 284-296-298 and finished at 14-over par.
