DES MOINES - Senior Ben Lincoln recorded a throw of 66.99m in the U.S. Track & Field Senior Championships on Sunday, finishing 17th overall. His mark was eighth best among collegiate competitors. It is the second year in a row that he has finished in the top-20 at the U.S. Championships.
Competitors in the meet were vying for the chance to go to the World Championships in Moscow, Russia if placed in the top-three and hit the standard mark.
Lincoln began the meet with the 12th best throw in the javelin in the country of 75.36m which set a Wake Forest school record. It also was the fifth best throw in the NCAA this year and placed him second overall in ACC history. He is a four-time All-ACC honoree and during his time at Wake Forest, he went to the NCAA Championships twice and last year finished 14th in the U.S. Olympic Trials.
"Ben should be very proud of his four years here at Wake Forest and of all his accomplishments," said head coach John Millar. "As a four-time All-ACC, NCAA Regional Qualifier and NCAA finalist, as well as a school record holder, Ben's record speaks for itself. He departs Wake Forest as one of the most decorated field event athletes ever to wear the Old Gold and Black. Ben's character and leadership were instrumental in the development of our throws program and he will be truly missed."
This season, Lincoln's throw of 75.36m set the facility record at Kenter Stadium and helped him earn ACC Performer of the Week honors. He also finished first in three meets this season while taking third at the ACC Championships.
"Ben has been an outstanding thrower for Wake Forest University," said assistant coach Zeb Sion. "He has represented the Deacs at the highest levels of ACC, NCAA, and USA competitions. Ben came to Wake as a sub 200' walk-on and through hard work and determination became a top tier, scholarship thrower with a best of 75.36m (247-3). I am very proud of Ben and enjoyed being his coach during the last two years of his career."
