WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Incoming Wake Forest men's tennis transfer Romain Bogaerts has received a wild card into the main draw of the Winston-Salem Open and will face Ysen-Sun Lu of Chinese Taipei in the first round.
A native of Belgium, Bogaerts had a phenomenal freshman season at Mississippi State, earning ITA National Rookie of the Year honors after rising as high as No. 6 in the ITA Rankings.
"Having an ATP tournament here is unbelievable for our program," said head coach Tony Bresky. "Romain has a great opportunity to test himself against some of the best players in the world in the main draw. I'm excited to see what he can do."
Bogaerts went 28-11 while playing at the No. 1 singles position, helping the Bulldogs rise as high as No. 9 in the ITA Rankings.
Three other Demon Deacons will compete in qualifying. Senior Adam Lee will take on Saketh Myneni, sophomore Pedro Dumont, also a Mississippi State transfer, will face Joao Sousa and freshman Aws Laaribi will play former Virginia star Michael Shabaz.
"It's fantastic that we are able to have four of our players competing in this tournament," said Bresky. "They all have a goal of one day playing professionally, and this will give them a taste of what it's like to play at the highest level."
The Winston-Salem Open is the last tournament on the ATP World Tour prior to the US Open, and this year's field includes top players Tomas Berdych, John Isner and Sam Querrey.
Qualifying will be held today at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center, due to rain.
