WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Wake Forest volleyball's season opener against East Carolina is slated for Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in Reynolds Gym, but the preparations for the match have been going on for months.
New head coach Ken Murczek and his staff have been working towards this day since February when they were hired and now the first match is finally here.
"We had a great preseason and now we're just tightening the screws," said Murczek. "We're definitely looking forward to competing against another team and get going."
One of the newest additions to the Wake Forest volleyball program is going to be a new atmosphere in the gym on game days. The Spirit of the Old Gold & Black student band will be in attendance for all matches, seated in the bleachers to bring a new dynamic to Reynolds Gym.
New seating options will be available on the baselines as well to give fans a new perspective.
"We want to make it one of the hardest places to play in the ACC and this will give us a new dynamic," said Murczek.
Part of the new preparations have also included using a new AirCAT machine which is a volleyball training device that can automatically serve balls to a player.
"We were fortunate enough to have the AirCAT in the gym this season since it has helped us from a training standpoint and really freed us coaches up," remarked Murczek. "We're very excited about the amount of reps our kids are able to receive."
The Demon Deacons host the Deacon Invitational this weekend beginning with Friday's match against East Carolina and will then take on ETSU on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with a night match against UNCG at 7 p.m. All home matches are free to attend.
