KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Wake Forest volleyball swept Eastern Illinois on Friday afternoon before downing Presbyterian 3-1 in the first day of the Kangaroo Klassic hosted by UMKC.
Kylie Hargreaves and Kristin Grissom hit double-digit kills in both matches leading the way for the Demon Deacons who move to 7-1 on the season.
The Demon Deacons swept Eastern Illinois in the first match of the day winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21). Wake Forest was led by Hargreaves who registered 13 kills followed by Grissom who had 10. Megan Miller had 13 digs while Sophia Dodd tallied 35 assists in the victory.
The Deacs came out early in the first set, going up 12-3 after a kill from Hargreaves. Eastern Illinois cut Wake Forest's lead to 15-10 but the Demon Deacons closed out the game outscoring the Panthers 10-5 to take the first set 25-15 following a kill from Hargreaves again.
Eastern Illinois held the lead throughout most of the second set, leading 13-8 midway through. Wake Forest fought back to eventually tie the game at 23 with a kill from Grissom. Anna Carley registered a service ace which Hargreaves backed up with a kill to help the Deacs win the second set 25-23.
In the third set, both teams battled to a 13-13 tie until Wake Forest went on a 4-0 run. Eastern Illinois narrowed the lead but a block from Grissom and Dodd sealed the win.
The Deacs held Eastern Illinois to a .178 hitting percentage. Reynae Hutchinson had 12 kills while Chelsea Lee had 11 to lead the Panthers.
Wake Forest defeated Presbyterian in the second match of the day 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-14).
Hargreaves had 13 kills again while Grissom had 10 along with Ashlee Rusk who had 10 kills. Jazmen Russell and Carley each added eight.
Presbyterian led the first set early, extending its lead to 19-13 before the Deacs fought back. Wake Forest climbed to make the score 24-22 in favor of the Blue Hose after a block from Russell but Presbyterian closed out the first set with a win.
Wake Forest dominated the second set, going up 10-1 thanks in part to consecutive blocks from Russell and Rusk. Presbyterian hit -.083 as a team in the set while the Deacs ended up winning 25-11.
The third set proved close again with Wake Forest holding onto a 13-10 lead. Wake Forest's offense led the way, going up 21-14 forcing Presbyterian to call a timeout. An attack error from the Blue Hose ended the set as Deacs won 25-15 to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Demon Deacons started out fast again in the fourth set by taking a 12-4 lead. Using a balanced attack, Sam Boesch closed the set and match out with a kill to win 25-14.
Wake Forest hit .309 for the match while Danae Rosendall had 34 assists to lead the team. Hargreaves had 12 kills and Megan Miller had 10. Rusk had a team-high seven block assists.
Rachel Hall had 11 kills for Presbyterian while Halle Tripp had 10.
Wake Forest is back in action on Saturday with a match against host UMKC at 2:30 p.m. EST to wrap up the Kangaroo Invitational.
