BLACKSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest claimed the top individual spot in both the men's and women's races at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday. Sophomore Kent Garrett won for the Demon Deacon men, while junior Aubrey Waggoner claimed the women's title for Wake Forest.

Led by Garrett, Wake Forest took the top three spots and five of the first six in the shortened 6k meet held at the site of last year's ACC Championships.

Garrett won the race in 18:55.60. He was followed by Jacob Poyner (19:01.10) in second and junior Connor Crowley (19:05.80) in third.

Sophomore Billy Fayette (19:12.30) finished fifth, and senior Tommy Ross (19:13.40) rounded out the Deacons' top five in sixth.

Sophomores Ryan Horgan (19:27.40) and James Allen McAlister III (19:35.30) placed ninth and 10th respectively.

Sophomore Evan Little (19:45.90) took 12th, and freshman Alex Giacco (19:58.90) finished 17th for the Deacons.

On the women's side, Wake Forest took two of the top three spots and six of the top eight in the 4k race.

Waggoner won the race in 14:07.90, and graduate student Kristin Weisse (14:17.30) placed third to lead the Deacons.

Sophomore Kathleen Darling (14:22.00) finished in fifth place to begin a string of four straight Deacons to cross the finish line. Freshmen Ellie Abrahamson (14:32.00), Gabrielle Merritt (14:40.70) and Tessa Riley (14:41.80) followed in places sixth through eighth respectively.

Freshman Michaela Keegan (14:54.80) placed 12th, freshmen Kathryn Lazarchick (16:12.80) 27th and sophomore Kendal Knous (16:28.70) 30th to round out the Wake Forest squad.

The Deacons will return to action when they host their second of three home meets this fall with the Wake Forest Invitational on Sept. 20 at Beeson Park in Kernersville. The meet will be a preview of the ACC Championships, which will also be held at Beeson Park on Nov. 1.

The women will race at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 6:15 p.m. on Sept. 20. Other schools scheduled to compete at the Wake Forest Invitational include Clemson, Davidson, Florida State, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio University.
