FULLERTON, Calif. - Wake Forest volleyball defeated William & Mary 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-18) and fell to Cal State Fullerton 3-2 (25-12, 26-28, 17-25, 25-16, 10-15) in the final day of the Fullerton Classic.
The Demon Deacons now have a 5-1 record which is the best start for Wake Forest since the 2004 season when the Deacs won five out of the first six matches.
Kristin Grissom and Matalee Reed were each named to the All-Tournament team. Reed had a combined 31 kills over the two matches on Saturday while Grissom had a combined 27.
Wake Forest defeated a tough William & Mary team in the first match of the day 3-1. Reed had a team-high 16 kills in the win while Kylie Hargreaves had 15 kills followed by Grissom with 12.
In the first set, both teams battled early with the score going back and forth. William & Mary took its first lead at 7-6, but Wake Forest responded with a kill from Hargreaves, tying the score up at seven. The two teams kept the score within two points throughout most of the set with the Tribe taking a late 23-21 lead.
Two errors from William & Mary, followed by a kill from Reed put the Deacs up 24-23. After the Tribe tied it up, Reed buried a kill while Jazmen Russell and Grissom came up with a block to seal the 26-24 win for the Demon Deacons.
William & Mary jumped out to an early lead in the second set, going up 9-4 before the Deacs came back to tie the game at 11 after a block from Russell and Grissom followed by a solo block from Russell.
With the score later tied at 16, Hargreaves rattled off three straight kills to put Wake Forest up 19-16. While the Tribe narrowed the score, the Demon Deacons closed out the set with a kill from Sophia Dodd to win 25-23.
The Tribe kept Wake Forest at bay early in the third set, going up 14-10 midway through. The Demon Deacons tied the set up at 15 after an error from the Tribe and then took a 16-15 lead off a kill from Rusk. William & Mary though quickly closed out the set, winning 25-18.
Wake Forest went up 12-9 in the fourth set behind a kill from Hargreaves. A 5-0 run helped the Deacs go up 18-11. Wake Forest quickly made work of the Tribe, closing out the set 25-18 after a service error from William & Mary.
Megan Miller had a team-high 16 digs while Grissom and Russell each had four block assists. The score was tied 35 times with 15 lead changes through the match.
In the second match of the day, Wake Forest fell to host Cal State Fullerton 3-2 in a close match that came down to the end.
Grissom and Reed each had 15 kills in the match, followed by Hargreaves who had 13 kills. Miller had 31 digs while Hargreaves and Dodd each had 11 digs. Grissom had seven block assists.
The Deacs initially trailed 4-2, but came back to take a 9-7 lead in the first set before going on a 10-1 run to go up 19-8. Wake Forest closed the set out, winning 25-12 behind four kills from Reed, snapping a 12-set win streak for Fullerton.
Fullerton kept a slim lead over Wake Forest throughout the second set, not allowing the Deacs to take the advantage. The Titans took a marathon set, winning 28-26 to even the match at 1-1.
After a 25-17 win in the third set, Fullerton led the match 2-1 heading into the fourth frame.
In the fourth set, Wake Forest led 11-9 until going on a 9-2 run to open its lead to 20-11. After the Titans narrowed the score to 23-16, Dodd and Grissom registered kills to help the Deacs win 25-16 and tie the match at 2-2.
Each team traded points in the fifth set until Cal State Fullerton started to pull away by taking a 9-6 lead. Following timeouts from each team, the Titans closed the set out 15-10, winning the match 3-2.
Wake Forest will head to the UMKC Kangaroo Klassic in Kansas City next weekend to take on Eastern Illinois, Presbyterian and UMKC with the first match against Eastern Illinois set for Friday.
