BLACKSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest women's soccer snapped its five-game winless streak by upsetting No. 10-ranked Virginia Tech 1-0 on the road at Thompson Field on Saturday night.
The victory was Wake Forest's (4-8-2, 2-4-1 ACC) first over a top-10 opponent since topping No. 10 UNC 2-1 nearly two years ago, on Oct. 21, 2012.
Kim Marshall notched her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute, when she fired a shot from 35 yards, which went over the Virginia Tech (12-4, 3-4 ACC) keeper's head and into the net.
Riley Ridgik earned her 10th point of the season on the play, finding Marshall open heading towards the goal in the middle of the field.
Marshall, playing just her fourth game at center forward after spending her first three-and-a-half seasons as a defender, powered the Demon Deacon offense with five shots, including all four of Wake Forest's shots on goal.
"The kids responded well. They played a great 90 minutes with a lot of pride. This is what they're capable of and what we've known they were capable of," head coach Tony da Luz said. "I'm really happy for Kim, being able to net the game-winner against a great team as a senior."
Wake Forest minimized the high-powered Hokie offense, which averages three goals per game, the fifth-highest total in the NCAA. Virginia Tech took just 10 shots, two on frame, and were shut out for just the second time all year.
Lindsay Preston earned the fourth clean sheet of her career, saving both of Virginia Tech's shots on goal.
"They're a higher-ranked team and they've scored a ton of goals this year, so for us to shut them out, our commitment to defend tonight was fantastic," da Luz added. "All these games now are going to be about pride and character and to build for the future."
GOOD IN GOLD
In their normal short-sleeve black road uniforms, Wake Forest is 0-6-1 this season. Tonight, the Deacs spurned the black kits to wear retro gold jerseys, and improved to 2-0 in them.
COMFORTABLE IN BLACKSBURG
Wake Forest has defeated two ranked opponents this year. Both of those victories came in Blacksburg, as the Deacons took down No. 13 Georgetown in Virginia Tech's Tournament in early September.
WEIGHT OFF THE SHOULDERS
Not including an own goal against NC State, Marshall's score was the first for Wake Forest in the run of play since taking on No. 1 UCLA more than a month ago. The other three goals since then came off set pieces.
.Wake Forest picks up its first road win of the 2014 campaign after going winless in the first six road games.
In all of the Deacs' first six road games, the home team scored a goal in the first half hour. Tonight, Wake Forest got off to a better start and conceded only one shot in the opening 30 minutes.
The Deacons snapped a six-game winless streak against the Hokies, earning the first win against VT since 2008.
ON DECK
Wake Forest returns home for its final two games at Spry Stadium, first against Boston College (Oct. 23 - 7 p.m.), followed by Syracuse (Oct. 26 - 1 p.m.).
