WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will host the fourth annual Wake Forest Invitational this weekend as 16 other teams come to town to compete at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The event will run all day from Friday to Sunday and admission is free. Friday will begin at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. Saturday will feature one round of doubles and two rounds of singles, which will include the singles main draw semifinals, and Sunday will conclude the tournament with a round of doubles and singles, including the championship matches for each flight.
The women's tennis teams from Stetson, Navy, Winthrop, Davidson, Richmond, Elon, Appalachian State, Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, East Carolina, West Virginia State, USC Upstate, NC State, Old Dominion, North Carolina A&T, and Western Kentucky have entered players in the tournament, joining a number of Wake Forest players.
Competing for the Demon Deacons will be Kimmy Guerin, Xue Zhang, Kasey Gardiner, Karen Forman, Samantha Asch and Courtney Meredith.
Guerin and Zhang will both be competing in A Singles, with Guerin opening against Navy's Sam Droop and Zhang playing Charlotte's Victoria Pahlett.
In B singles, Asch will take on East Carolina's Maria Storozheva, while Gardiner will face Allie Pavlansky of Navy.
Representing the Deacons in C singles, Forman will play an opening round match against Anna Zoske of USC Upstate and Meredith will take on Old Dominion's Ivana Vukovic.
Asch and Guerin will represent the Deacons in A Doubles, Zhang and Meredith will play in B Doubles and Gardiner and Forman will play C doubles.
NOTES:
The Deacs have had strong showings in their first two tournaments of the fall season.
At William & Mary, No. 1 doubles duo of Luisa Fernandez and Kasey Gardiner upset Maryland's ITA No. 55-ranked team Luus and Bredikhina 8-2.
At the Tribe Invitational, freshman Meredith was a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles in her first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Samantha Asch went 3-0 in singles play.
The Deacs also swept Indiana in singles play in Williamsburg, Va. The Hoosiers were ranked No. 51 last year.
