
No. 4 Florida State Edges Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite three Deacons recording double-digit kills, it wasn't enough as the Wake Forest volleyball team fell to the No. 4-ranked Florida State Seminoles 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 11-25, 22-25) on Sunday afternoon in Reynolds Gym.
Kylie Long led the way with 12.5 points on 11 kills and three block assists Jazmen Russell added a team-high 12 kills and seven digs Hanna Lee tallied 10 of her own. Mercedes Vaughn had a match-high 13 kills to lead the Seminoles.
The loss moves the Demon Deacons to 12-11 overall and 2-7 in the ACC, while Florida State remains undefeated at 21-0 overall and 9-0 in the ACC with the win.
In the beginning of the first set, both teams were close, but a service error by the Seminoles gave the Deacs a 13-12 lead. Florida State then went on a 6-0 run to create a 18-13 lead and Wake Forest used both of its timeouts during the run. The Noles then outscored the Deacons 7-4 to close out a 25-17 set victory.
Wake Forest started off strong with a 7-4 lead after a kill by Long, and the Seminoles called their first timeout of the match. The visitors would have to call a second timeout when the Deacs took a commanding 17-12 lead in the set following a service ace by Anna Carley. Florida State did make a 4-2 run to make the score 19-15 and the Deacons called a timeout, but a 6-3 run by the Demon Deacons gave them a 25-18 set victory. Both teams were tied 1-1 heading into the intermission.
Out of the break, the Seminoles got off to a hot start with a 9-3 run forcing Wake Forest to call for a timeout. The Deacons would call their second timeout of the set after a 4-2 run made the score 13-5. Florida State would go on to outscore the Deacs 12-6 to take the third set 25-11 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Demon Deacons took the early 11-8 lead in the fourth set and Florida State called a timeout after an Ashlee Rusk kill. After holding the lead for several more rallies, the Seminoles retook the lead 16-15 late on and the Deacs called a timeout. The Demon Deacons called a timeout again when Florida State extended their lead 19-17. The Seminoles closed out the match outscoring Wake Forest 6-5 to take the final set 25-22.
NOTES:
Hanna Lee recorded her first-career double-digit kill performance with 10 today against Florida State. She was the only player to record a solo block in the match.
Jazmen Russell recorded her 12th consecutive double-digit kill performance with 12 today.
Matalee Reed recorded a team-high five block assists while also adding on seven kills.
The Deacs recorded 14 block assists, only the second time in the last five matches that Wake Forest has recorded double-digit blocks as a team.
