WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tied 1-1 early in the second half, Wake Forest scored three unanswered goals to defeat Duke 4-1 on Friday night in the seventh annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match.
Sam Fink, Jon Bakero, Tane Gent and Jared Odenbeck all scored for Wake Forest (6-4-0, 2-2-0 ACC) in the victory over the Blue Devils (5-4-1, 2-2-0). Ian Harkes, Hayden Partain, Gent and Gauger all chipped in assists.
After leading 1-0 going into halftime on the goal from Fink, Duke tied the game up just 10 minutes into the second half. Wake Forest responded with a go-ahead goal from Bakero nearly four minutes later and added two insurance goals.
The Demon Deacons applied pressure throughout the first half as Wake Forest tallied 12 shots and limited Duke to just two. In the sixth minute, Tane Gent nearly put one in near the right post but it rolled wide. Harkes and Jacori Hayes had back-to-back chances halfway through as Harkes shot went high and Hayes strike hit the cross bar.
Wake Forest went up shortly before the end of the first half as Fink headed in a Harkes free kick. Harkes was fouled in the 43rd minute just outside the Duke box and fed the pass into Fink near the left side of the goal.
Nick Palodichuk scored from 20 yards out in the 56th minute to tie the game at 1-1. In the 59th minute, Bakero converted a free kick from 25 yards away over the keeper's head to put the Deacs up 2-1.
Holding the 2-1 advantage, Odenbeck tallied a long-range shot off passes from Gent and Gauger. Gent then scored his third of the season in the 85th minute as he went on a long run following a lead pass from Partain to beat the goalie, putting the Deacs up by a final of 4-1.
