Wake Forest Falters at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell in its second ACC match of the weekend to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at O'Keefe Gymnasium.
The Demon Deacons fall to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in the ACC with the loss and the Yellow Jackets get their first conference win to improve to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.
Matalee Reed and Jazmen Russell paced the Deacs with 10 kills each. Caroline Wolf recorded 24 digs, and Kylie Long added seven kills.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead in the first set 10-3. The Deacs crept back into the set with a 7-1 run to make the score 11-10. Georgia Tech responded with a 7-0 run to make it 18-10 and closed out the first set with a 25-17 first set victory to take the lead in the match.
The second set was close throughout, as the Demon Deacons held on to a 12-10 lead early. Georgia Tech then powered back to take a 19-16 lead and Wake Forest called a timeout. The Deacs then used a 4-0 run to retake the lead 20-19. After the Yellow Jackets tied the set 20-20, Wake Forest retook the lead and didn't look back as they took the second set 25-22 to tie the match 1-1 heading into intermission.
Out of the break, Georgia Tech took an early 10-6 advantage, forcing Ken Murczek to call a timeout. The host team continued to extend their lead, creating a seven point lead at 16-9. The Deacs went on a 3-0 run to force the Yellow Jackets to call for time, but it wouldn't phase Georgia Tech as they went on to take the third with ease 25-14 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Despite the Yellow Jackets taking an early 4-0 lead, Wake Forest bounced back with a 10-2 run to take a 10-6 lead. The Deacs continued to use the momentum to extend their lead 16-11, and rolled with it until the end of the set to win 25-17 forcing a fifth and final set with the match tied 2-2.
In the final set, Georgia Tech took an early 4-1 lead and then continued to pad their lead 10-6 after a Wake Forest timeout. Following the Demon Deacons' second timeout of the set, they were able to tie up the set 12-12. A 3-0 run by the Yellow Jackets would clinch it for the hosts winning 15-12 in the final set.
NOTES:
This was the second consecutive match that the Deacs played in a five set thriller.
It was the sixth win in the last seven matchups for the Yellow Jackets against the Demon Deacons, even though the Deacs won last year's matchup.
Wolf recorded 20-plus digs for the second consecutive match recording 28 on Friday against NC State and 24 this afternoon. It is the second time she has done it this season.
Russell recorded double-digit kills for the seventh consecutive match with 10 today.
Wake Forest has now played in six matches this season that have gone to five sets.
