Wake Forest's Season Ends With a Loss to Albany

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Flori Van Rijswijk's game-winning goal in the 45th minute proved to be the difference as the No. 5-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 12 Albany 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey Complex at the University of Maryland.
Wake Forest ends its season with a 14-7 record and as the 2014 ACC Champions after the loss. Albany improves to 19-2 and will face Maryland in the quarterfinals after the win.
The Great Danes got on the board first in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Albany won a penalty corner and Anna Bottino finished off the play with a shot into the far right of the cage. Flori Van Rijswijk provided the assist to put Albany in front.
Kozniuk tied things up with her 16th goal of the season right before halftime with a drag flick goal in the 33rd minute to make the score 1-1 at the break. Christine Conroe injected the corner and Jess Newak stopped the ball to set up Kozniuk for the goal.
In the second half, Kozniuk made another big play for the Demon Deacons as her defensive save kept the match tied in the 36th minute.
Albany scored the game-winner in the 45th minute. Van Rijswijk scored on another corner off a pass from Paula Heuser to give the Great Danes a 2-1 victory over the Demon Deacons.
NOTES:
Anna Kozniuk recorded her third defensive save of the season and her fifth in her career.
Wake Forest falls to a 29-11 overall record in NCAA Field Hockey Championships.
First loss in NCAA first round match since 2010 when they lost 3-1 to Princeton in Charlottesville, Va.
