
Demon Deacons suffer 79-72 setback at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team dropped a 79-72 contest at Richmond on Sunday.
Senior Dearica Hamby led the Demon Deacons (6-4) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It was the fifth double-double of the season for the forward. It also marked the sixth time this year Hamby has scored at least 20 points.
Freshman Nicole Floyd scored a career-high 14 points with six rebounds. Freshman Amber Campbell added 10 points and three steals. Kelila Atkinson had a game-high five assists to go with eight points, four rebounds and three blocks.
It was a back-and-forth first half with seven tied and 11 lead changes. Wake Forest's biggest lead of the first half was a 21-16 advantage with 11:46 on the clock. Atkinson found Hamby on two straight possessions and Amber Campbell picked up a steal and fast break layup to make it a 19-16 lead. Hamby drained a pull-up jumper to push the lead to five, 21-16.
Floyd made back-to-back three pointers to give the Deacons a 30-27 lead. Milan Quinn grabbed a steal and scored the fast break bucket to once again give Wake Forest a five-point lead, 32-27, with just over seven minutes left in the half.
Hamby scored to tie the game 38-38 with 2:02 remaining in the opening half but Richmond maintained possession over the final two minutes and scored four points in the closing time to take a 42-38 lead in to the break.
Campbell hit a three early in the second half to get Wake Forest within three, 52-49, but Richmond responded with an 8-0 run to open up a 60-49 lead with 13:12 left in the game.
Wake Forest went on a 6-0 run to close the lead to four, 62-58, after Floyd made two free throws. The Spiders answered with a four-point run to open up the last lead they needed in the game, holding on for the 79-72 victory.
NOTES:
Dearica Hamby recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Dearica Hamby moved up three spots on Wake Forest's career points list to take over the No. 7 slot. She now has 1,354 career points.
Freshman Nicole Floyd scored a career-high 14 points in the game.
Freshman Amber Campbell scored in double figures for the seventh time this season.
UP NEXT:
Wake Forest returns home for the final four non-conference games of the season beginning with Towson on Dec. 18.
The Demon Deacons will face Towson at 11:30 a.m. with local schools in attendance.
The Deacs are 1-1 all-time against Towson but haven't faced the Tigers since 2006.
