MOBILE, Ala. - Wake Forest freshman Clancy Waugh fired a 4-under 68 on Tuesday to win the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at 6-under par. The win was the first of Waugh's career.
After starting the final round two shots back, the North Palm Beach, Fla., native made up the deficit with two birdies and an eagle on the opening nine. He then played the back with eight pars and a birdie on the par-3 17th to finish with his second 68 of the tournament. Waugh's season-best score of 6-under 210 was two shots better than Auburn's Niclas Carlsson, who was the 36-hole leader.
"I enjoyed watching Clancy (Waugh) play this week," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "He's a young guy who's been working on staying calm on the course and this week, he was in total control of his game. He managed his game well. For a guy who can really bomb the ball, he was hitting low controlled shots off some tees just to get the ball in the play."
"The key point for him today came on his only bogey of the day," Haas continued. "He got a little unlucky with his drive and had to take an unplayable. He then pitched-out and got up-and-down for bogey from 120 yards out. He really limited the damage and then turned around and eagled the next hole. If he hadn't kept it together, he could have made a couple of big numbers and then he finishes a couple of shots back. I'm really proud of the way he played."
Waugh is Wake Forest's first individual champion since Lee Bedford won the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in 2012. He is also just the 11th Demon Deacon freshman to win an event, joining the likes of Arnold Palmer (1949), Curtis Strange (1973), Lanny Wadkins (1969), Billy Andrade (1982), Jay Haas (1973), Jerry Haas (1981), Gary Hallberg (1976), Sean Moore (2004), David Thore (1973) and Bob Byman (1974).
"Hopefully this will give him (Waugh) some confidence and show him that he can be something special if he continues to work," Haas added.
As a team, the Demon Deacons finished in eighth place in the 15-team field after a final round 292. Wake was 16-over par for the three rounds. Auburn shot back-to-back under-par rounds over the final two rounds to take the team title at 6-under par. Kentucky was second at even-par.
Freshman Danny Guise carded a final round 74 and finished in a tie for 26th at 5-over par. Guise posted a 2-under 70 in the second round, his ninth round of the season at par or better.
Sophomore Davis Womble had a tough day on Monday, carding rounds of 78-76 but rebounded nicely on Tuesday with an even-par 72. He was 3-over par through 12 holes and went on to make three birdies in the final six holes. Womble finished tied for 51st at 10-over par.
Senior Thomas Birdsey and Beau Cutts finished at 12 and 13 over par, respectively. Birdsey carded rounds of 75-73-80 and Cutts posted scores of 77-74-78.
At the USA Individual Tournament, played at the Magnolia Grove Falls Course, freshman Woody Woodward finished tied for fourth after rounds of 77-73-72 (+9). Andrew Winters and Cyrus Stewart each finished in a tie for 12th at 14-over par.
The Demon Deacons will be off until the week of spring break, which is March 10-14. The team will head west to San Diego to compete in the San Diego Intercollegiate at the San Diego Country Club. The first round is slated for Monday, March 10.
