
Deacons Fall At Miami 72-64

MIAMI, Fla. - Despite 23 points and 13 rebounds from junior Dearica Hamby, Wake Forest fell Sunday afternoon at Miami 72-64.
The loss drops the Deacons to 14-13 on the season and 5-9 in the conference. Miami improves to 14-13 and 6-8 in the ACC.
Hamby's 20th double-double of the season ties her with Tracy Connor for most double-doubles in a single-season in school history. Her 23 points now give her 587 points on the year, breaking Connor's school-record of 576 points during the 1992-93 season.
Senior Chelsea Douglas, who missed the last three games with a foot injury, returned to the floor and scored 15 points in 30 minutes of action. She also dished-out a team-high tying three assists.
Millesa Calicott hit two more three-pointers and finished with 10 points while freshman Mykia Jones finished with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
For Miami, Adrianne Motley led the way with 15 points, four assists and four steals.
The difference in the contest was the Miami pressure defense. The `Canes forced Wake Forest into a 27 turnovers on the day and had a school-record 19 steals.
After falling behind 7-2 to start the game, the Deacons went on a 15-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. Hamby had nine points during the run while the defense held Miami scoreless for nearly five minutes. The `Canes would settle down and cut the lead to three at 20-17 but another 8-3 run for the Deacons pushed the margin back out to eight at 28-20 with 5;30 to play in the half.
Douglas scored her first points in over two weeks as she converted a fast-break lay-in and then hit a step-back three-pointer to give the Deacons their largest lead of the game at 35-24. However, Miami took advantage of a pair of Deacon turnovers and would end the half on a 6-0 run to cut the Wake lead to 36-32 at halftime.
Wake Forest shot over 57 percent in the first half while hold Miami to just 34 percent but 10 Wake Forest turnovers led to 11 points UM points. Hamby led all scorers at the break with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Just like the first half, Miami came out on a run would quickly trimmed the Deacon lead to one at 45-44 just four minutes into the second half. The margin stayed within four until a 10-0 Hurricane run gave the hosts a 62-53 with 6:19 to play. The Deacs had just one shot and five turnovers during the run.
That run proved to be the difference in the game as Wake Forest wasn't able to get within seven points the rest of the way. Each time the Deacons looked to make a run, Miami had an answer and would hold on a for a 72-64 victory.
Wake Forest returns to action this Thursday when it faces No. 7 Duke in Durham. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
