SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 5-under 67 from freshman Danny Gusie, Wake Forest carded its lowest round of the tournament and would finish third at the 13-team Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Tuesday at the San Diego Country Club.
The Demon Deacons entered the final round in fourth place but got a pair of under par rounds en route to posting a 4-under 284. That lifted Wake ahead of Michigan into third place in the event. Southern Cal also bumped-up one spot on Tuesday after an 8-under 280 and would take the team title by seven shots.
Guise shot rounds of 72-71 on Monday and came into Tuesday's round at 1-under par. He could not have gotten off to a better start as he birdied the par-4 first and then eagled the par-5 second. Three birdies later, Guise would make the turn in 6-under 30. Despite back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12, Guise finished with a birdie at No. 14 and four-straight pars for a 5-under 67. That was the lowest round of the season for the Greenwich, Conn., native and his tie for third was also his best finish.
Fellow freshman Clancy Waugh had a 3-under 69 in the afternoon on Monday but found himself 6-over par through 11 holes on Tuesday. Waugh then pared Nos. 12 and 13 before closing strong with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 to post a 4-over 76. That left him in 18th place at 3-over par.
Senior Thomas Birdsey finished one shot behind Waugh at 4-over par after rebounding on Tuesday with a 1-under 71. He made four birdies in his final round.
Davis Womble and Cyrus Stewart each finished the tournament at 5-over par and tied for 23rd. Womble birdied his first two holes of the day and then closed with another birdie at No. 17 to card a 2-over 74. Stewart was 3-over par through 12 holes on Tuesday but eagled the par-5 16th and birdied No. 17 to tie his lowest round of the season at even-par 72.
Individually, Beau Cutts and Woody Woodward finished out the tournament with rounds of 79 and 78, respectively. Cutts was 12-over for the three rounds while Woodward was 18-over.
San Diego State's Xander Schauffele backed-up his 36-hole lead with a 5-under 67 on Tuesday and would win the individual title at 11-under par. He was two shots better than Rico Hoey of Southern Cal and five shots ahead of Guise.
The Demon Deacons return to action in a couple of weeks at one of the best events of the year, The Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awandaw, S.C. The first round is set for Sunday, March 23.
