AWENDAW, S.C. - Behind three players in the top-15, Wake Forest is in contention heading into the final round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate.
The Demon Deacons struggled a bit in the windy cool conditions on Monday, posting an 11-over 299. But they weren't the only team that had problems. The scoring average in round one was 73.09 but it was over four shots higher at 77.24 on Tuesday. Auburn had the low round of the day at 6-over 294. The Tigers are tied for second at 3-over par for the tournament as Virginia leads at 2-over. Wake Forest is just three shots off of the Cavaliers pace at 5-over par.
Freshman Danny Guise had the best round of the day for the Deacons as his second-straight round of even-par 72 has him in a tie for ninth headed into Tuesday. He made two birdies in the first four holes but a double-bogey at the par-4 ninth left him at 1-over at the turn. The Greenwich, Conn., native then made eight pars and a nice birdie at the 183-yard par-3 17th.
Senior Thomas Birdsey bogeyed his opening hole on Monday and wasn't able to get much going until making a birdie at the par-4 16th and finished with a 2-over 74. Coupled with his 1-under 71 on Sunday, Birdsey is 1-over par and tied for 15th.
Sophomore Davis Womble is the third Demon Deacon in the top-20 as his second round 75 came after an opening 70. He is tied with Birdsey at 2-over par. Womble counted a pair of double-bogeys on Monday with three birdies.
Freshman Clancy Waugh carded a 78 in the second round while Cyrus Stewart rounded out the Deacon-five with a round of 80.
The Demon Deacons will start the final round at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday morning in the second wave off the first tee. Wake is paired with the College of Charleston and Missouri. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final round.
