HIGH POINT, N.C. - Wake Forest fell to High Point 5-1 on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest at Williard Stadium on the campus of High Point University.
Wake Forest (19-11, 8-4 ACC) was led by Joey Rodriguez who went 4-for-5 at the plate for a career-high in hits. Ben Breazeale recorded the lone RBI for Wake Forest in the game.
High Point (15-12, 4-5 Big South) scored two runs in the sixth and two in the eighth inning to break open a 1-1 game.
Connor Johnstone started on the mound for Wake Forest and went a career-high 7.0 innings pitched, giving up three runs, two earned runs. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
High Point scored the first run of the game in the third on a sacrifice fly which was unearned after a passed ball earlier in the frame.
Wake Forest tied the game up in the fourth inning as Breazeale countered with a sacrifice fly to even the game at 1-1. The Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning as Josh Greene tripled to right field scoring a run and then scored himself after a Wake Forest error.
The Deacs loaded the bases in the seventh inning but the Panthers got a ground out to escape out of the jam. High Point extended its lead to 5-1 as the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the eighth inning and closed the game out for the win.
Conor Lourey earned the win for High Point while Kyle Bradenburg, Greene and Josh Spano all recorded RBIs.
Wake Forest and High Point will face off in the second game of the home-and-home series on Wednesday at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
