WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Duke rallied back from a three-run deficit to overcome Wake Forest 8-6 on Sunday in the series finale at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Wake Forest (26-21, 12-12 ACC) built a 6-3 lead but the Blue Devils (28-17, 15-9 ACC) came back to win 8-6 to complete the sweep. Charlie Morgan had a home run with three RBIs while Conor Keniry recorded an RBI. Morgan went 3-for-5 on the day while Kevin Jordan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Connor Kaden got the start and gave up four hits in 4.0 innings pitched. He gave up two runs, one earned with four strikeouts. Max Tishman, Parker Dunshee, John McCarren and Aaron Fossas all pitched in relief though McCarren took the loss.
Morgan homered in the first inning off Duke starter Michael Matuella who was throwing in the upper-90s. It was the fourth home run for Morgan on the season and the second this week after he had a two-run shot at Charlotte.
Duke countered in the top of the second with a run scored on a Wake Forest fielding error to even the game at 1-1.
The Blue Devils went up 2-1 on a solo homer from Aaron Cohn but Wake Forest came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jordan singled to lead off the inning, followed by bunt singles from Grant Shambley and Evan Stephens. Keniry walked to bring home a run while Morgan singled to right center, plating two. Matt Conway hit into a double play though it brought home a run to make it a 5-2 game.
Cohn hit his second solo homer in the sixth inning to make it a two-run advantage though Wake Forest scratched out a run in the sixth after Jordan scored following a rundown.
Wake Forest led 6-3 but Duke tied up the game in the seventh off a three-run homer from Chris Marconcini. The Blue Devils then added hit solo homers in the eighth and ninth innings to make it a 8-6 game. Robert Huber closed the Deacs out in the ninth for the save.
The Demon Deacons are back in action on Tuesday when Wake Forest takes on Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. with a first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
