NC State Defeats Wake Forest 9-1

RALEIGH - Wake Forest fell to NC State 9-1 on Friday in the opening contest of the three game ACC series.
Ben Breazeale led Wake Forest (26-23, 12-13 ACC) offensively with two hits including an RBI-double. Grant Shambley, Conor Keniry and Will Craig also collected hits. Connor Kaden started the game and went two innings, giving up just one hit while striking out four.
NC State (28-20, 10-15 ACC) led 3-0 after three innings before a 75 minute rain delay. Following the rain delay, the Wolfpack scored one in the fourth and five in the seventh. Wake Forest scored one in the top of the seventh on a double from Breazeale.
After two scoreless innings, NC State plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Wolfpack scored one on a fielder's choice and two runs off wild pitches to lead 3-0. An RBI ground out in the fourth inning put NC State up 4-0.
Wake Forest got on the board in the seventh inning as Nate Mondou scored on a double to right center from Breazeale. After Mondou reached on an error and stole second, Breazeale hit a double to the deepest part in the ballpark for the Deacs first run.
NC State added five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Wolfpack extended its lead to a final of 9-1.
Carlos Rodon earned the win for NC State as he went seven innings with nine strikeouts. Preston Palmeiro and Garrett Suggs each tallied two RBIs.
Max Tishman took the loss for Wake Forest while Matt Pirro, Nate Jones and Garrett Kelly pitched in relief. Pirro struck out three in two innings while Kelly struck out two. The Wake Forest pitching staff struck out a combined 10 batters in the game.
Wake Forest and NC State continue the series on Saturday with game two scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. The game can be heard live on WakeForestSports.com and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
