RALEIGH, N.C. - Wake Forest junior Cyrus Stewart gave himself quite the birthday gift on Saturday - a trip to the NCAA Championship. Stewart carded a final round 72 in breezy conditions to earn the individual qualifying spot at the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
The top individual not on one of the five advancing teams earned a spot in next week's NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Stewart started the round on the qualifying spot and didn't let anyone else into the mix with steady play throughout the day. He birdied the par-5 first and then rebounded from an unfortunate double-bogey at No. 5 with another birdie at the par-5 seventh.
His birdie on No. 13 gave him a four-shot edge on the nearest competitor and a solid closing three holes pushed him through. Since the NCAA went to the regional format in 1989, Stewart is just the third Demon Deacon to individually qualify, joining Lee Bedford in 2011 and Michael Capone in 1999.
For the week, Stewart made 14 birdies, carded rounds of 69-68-72 and finished in a tie for sixth place at 4-under par.
As a team, the Deacons came into the day in sixth place, six shots behind Florida State which occupied the fifth and final qualifying spot. Wake was never able to make up any ground over the course of the round and finished in seventh place, nine shots behind the Seminoles.
Freshman Clancy Waugh finished behind Stewart in 38th place after carding a final round 75. Waugh made eight birdies over three rounds and finished at 7-over par.
Fellow freshman Danny Guise finished two shots behind Waugh in 46th place at 9-over par. Guise carded one birdied and 13 pars in his final round 74.
Sophomore Davis Womble opened the tournament with a round of 78 but bounced-back with rounds of 72-75 to finish. He was tied for 60th at 12-over par. Womble finished the second round with a rare birdie at No. 18 and then made a nice birdie at the par-3 17th on Saturday.
Senior Thomas Birdsey finished his Demon Deacon career with rounds of 71-77-78 to finish in a tie for 63rd at 13-over.
Stewart will head to Kansas next weekend for the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Championship. The 72-hole stroke-play portion begins on Friday, May 23.
