WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest junior Cyrus Stewart is set to make his first appearance at the NCAA Championship this weekend. The 72-hole event begins on Friday at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Stewart earned a spot in the tournament thanks to stellar play last weekend at the NCAA Raleigh Regional. Playing in his hometown, Stewart carded rounds of 69-68-72 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club to finish in a tie for sixth place at 4-under par. That was not only his best finish of the season but it was also the best finish by a player not on a qualifying team, earning him a trip to Kansas.
This season, Stewart has played in 10 events and has a scoring average of 74.00. He had not recorded a top-10 or an under-par finish before the regionals. But a good two weeks of practice leading into the regionals gave him a sense of confidence and it appears he is peaking at the right time.
Stewart is one of six individuals in the field and will start the championship at 10 a.m. ET off the tenth tee on Friday. An individual NCAA Champion will be crowned at the end of the 72-hole event. There will be a cut to the low-40 and ties after 54 holes. The final round of the stroke play competition will be shown live on The Golf Channel.
Stewart is the fourth Demon Deacon to qualify for the NCAA Championship as an individual. Michael Capone missed the cut in 1999, Bill Haas finished runner-up as a senior in 2004 and Lee Bedford finished tied for 32nd in 2011. Wake Forest has had a total of four NCAA individual champions - Gary Hallberg (1979), Jay Haas (1975), Curtis Strange (1974) and Arnold Palmer (1949-50).
