WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Saturday when the Demon Deacons compete at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
The meet, which is hosted by Furman University and also features high school races, will be held at the Furman Golf Course in Greenville. The collegiate women's 6k race begins at 8:30 a.m. with the men's collegiate 8k race set for 9:15 a.m.
"We are looking forward to competing at Furman this weekend and building upon the team success that we had two weeks ago at Boone," said Wake Forest head coach John Millar. "This will be a good early-season test for us, as the level of competition should be much higher and should be a good indicator for both teams moving forward.
"We have had some very good training sessions over the past two weeks and are anxious to see how this will carry over into a competitive opportunity."
Wake Forest won both the men's and women's team titles at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open on Aug. 29 in Boone, N.C. The Demon Deacon men had the top three finishers in Kent Garrett, Simon Holden and Kyle Graves. Wake Forest also had six of the top nine and seven of the top 12 runners at the meet.
The Wake Forest women were led by Samantha Jones and Cate Allen at the Covered Bridge. Jones won the race, while Allen was not far behind in third place. The Deacons put four runners in the top 11 and five in the top 20, as the team edged out UNC by one point and Appalachian State by two for the title.
"Both Sam Jones and Cate Allen should have gained a lot of confidence from their previous race and hopefully this will carry over to Furman, as we look for this duo to lead our women's team," said Millar.
"On the men's side, we have a group of six men who are all capable of having strong races," added Millar. "Kent Garrett was our number one runner two weeks ago, and I am anxious to see if he can continue to lead the group or if there are others who will step up and challenge him."
Following the Furman Invitational, the Deacons will race at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 26. The meet will be a preview of the ACC Championships, which will be held on the same course on Oct. 31.
