
Wake Forest Sweeps Final Day of Charleston Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team swept the final day of the College of Charleston Classic with wins over Cal State Fullerton and Stetson on Saturday at TD Arena.
Jazmen Russell led the way for the Deacs as she recorded 37 kills over the two matches. The Demon Deacons improve to 8-2 overall after going 2-1 over the weekend in Charleston.
Wake Forest returns to action on Thursday night when they return to Reynolds Gym to face the Oklahoma Sooners with the match beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Wake Forest 3, Cal State Fullerton 2
Russell tallied a match-high 23 kills as Wake Forest rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Cal State Fullerton 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 15-11) in the first match on the second day of the College of Charleston Classic.
For the match, Russell hit .392 for the match while tallying three total blocks. Brianna Lynch was the other Demon Deacon with double-digit kills as she tallied 16 kills hitting .429 for the match. Matalee Reed added seven kills and one block.
Ashlee Rusk and Kylie Long each had five kills while Danae Rosendall had 46 assists in the victory.
Cal State Fullerton took an early 10-5 lead in the first set following three straight attack errors by the Deacs forcing head coach Ken Murczek to call a timeout. The Titans were unphased by the timeout call and went on a 3-0 run to distance themselves from the Demon Deacons. Cal State Fullerton closed out the first set 25-17.
The second set started off close until Wake Forest pulled ahead 17-13 midway through. The Titans brought the set within two points at 17-15 with a kill and bad set by the Deacs, but the Demon Deacons were able to close out the set 25-21 and tie the match 1-1.
The Titans got off to a hot start in the third taking a 7-1 lead. The Deacs were able to tie up the set late with both teams battling to a 24-24 tie. Cal State Fullerton closed out the set 26-24 after two consecutive kills to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, Wake Forest dominated the set gaining separation and its largest lead 19-7. The Demon Deacons didn't look back winning the set 25-16 sending the match into a fifth set.
After forcing it to a fifth set, both teams were tied early 4-4, but the Deacs had to call timeout when the Titans took a 6-4 lead. After trailing by as much as 9-5, Wake Forest roared back with a 5-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. The Demon Deacons used a 5-2 run to close out the match as Russell's thunderous kill gave the Deacs a 15-11 set victory.
Four Titans were in double-figures in the kills category. Niki Withers had a team-high 16 kills to lead Cal State Fullerton, while Stephanie Buss had 15, Holland Crenshaw added 12, and Megan Kurz had 10.
Wake Forest 3, Stetson 0
The Demon Deacons completed the second day sweep of the College of Charleston Classic defeating Stetson 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 26-24) Saturday evening. Russell tallied a match-high 14 kills, while Reed added nine kills and a block assist.
Rusk recorded six kills and three block assists and Long added five kills and two block assists. Rosendall had 36 assists as the setter.
In the first set, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, but the Hatters cut the lead to 9-8 with a 5-1 run. The Demon Deacons then created separation getting up to their largest lead of the set at 18-9. The Deacs didn't look back closing out the set 25-17.
Unlike the first set, most of the second set was close as both teams were tied 14-14 midway through the set. The Deacs finally created some separation with a 22-18 lead. The Demon Deacons went on to win the second 25-21 and took a 2-0 lead heading to the third set.
In the final set, it was tied early at 4-4, but Stetson took the lead 11-9. The Deacs would tie it up again 12-12 and the two teams traded leads until it was tied a 24-24 at the end of the set. The Hatters would falter at the end as two attack errors lead to a Wake Forest 26-24 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
