LAFAYETTE, La. - A trio of Demon Deacons earned victories and two are still alive in the singles draw after the first day of the Cajuns Tennis Classic on Thursday.
Skander Mansouri and Sam Bloom are yet to fall in the singles draw, while Jon Ho fell in the second round after opening with an upset victory.
In the first match of his collegiate career, Mansouri jumped out to a commanding 6-4, 2-0 lead, before winning due to the retirement of Andrew Korinek of LSU.
Bloom continued his strong play with a straight-set victory over Kentucky's Trey Yates, 7-5, 6-3.
Mansouri's second-round match against No. 56 George Goldhoff, the No. 5 seed from Texas, and Bloom's match against John Mee, also from Texas, were suspended due to impending weather.
In his first match of the 2014-15 season, Ho upset No. 106-ranked Adrian Berkowitz from Texas in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
In the following round, Ho's attempt at another upset came up just short. No. 86 Arjun Kadhe from Oklahoma State, seeded seventh, came from behind to earn the 6-7 (9), 6-4, 7-5 win.
Anthony Delcore fell to No. 89-ranked Nick Wood, the No. 8 seed, by a 7-5, 6-2 margin in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, Kentucky's Kevin Lai, ranked No. 102 nationally, defeated Delcore in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Singles play will continue at 9:00 a.m. with the suspended matches, followed by the Championship Singles quarterfinals, scheduled for noon. Championship Doubles will begin and Consolation Singles play will continue, tentatively, at 2:30 p.m.
Additionally, the Deacs will open play in the UVa Ranked +1 Invitational tomorrow. Maksim Kan opens against Louisville's Albert Wagner, Christian Seraphim takes on Francisco Dias from George Washington, and Nicky Kunz will play Furman's Adam Steryous.
