WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshmen Rachel Hirsch and Brooks Doxey tallied their first-career goals in the first half as the No. 16-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team shut out the Appalachian State Mountaineers 3-0 Tuesday night in non-conference play at Kentner Stadium.

The Demon Deacons, now ranked No. 16 in the NFHCA rankings, improve to 6-3 overall on the season heading into their second ACC match of the season Friday against Louisville. The Mountaineers fall to 2-7 overall with the loss.

Appalachian State got off their only shot of the game at the 1:55 mark, when Dana Wetmore's attempt sailed wide of the cage.

Doxey got the Deacs on the board first redirecting a pass from Kali Vicars just in front of Appalachian State goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi at the 14:12 mark to put Wake Forest ahead 1-0.

Just a few minutes before halftime, Hirsch stole a back pass from the defense and dribbled Ceppi one-on-one and slotted home Wake Forest's second at the 32:25 mark to give the host a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Demon Deacons scored their final goal of the match at the 49:52 mark off a well-executed penalty corner to make it 3-0. Christine Conroe's corner was received by Shannon Eby, who gave it up to Anna Kozniuk to strike home for her eight goal of the season.

The Deacs would go on to win 3-0 as they outshot Appalachian State 22-1 for the match. It is the seventh time in the last 10 meetings and third consecutive matchup that the Deacs have shut out the Mountaineers.

Wake Forest continues its homestand on Friday at 6 p.m., when they host their second ACC match of the season against conference newcomer Louisville at Kentner Stadium. The team will then host California in a non-conference battle on Sunday, September 28, at noon.
