WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Elisa Garcia slotted home the game-winning goal just over five minutes into the first overtime period as the No. 16-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 11 Louisville 2-1 on Friday night at Kentner Stadium in ACC action.
Emily Conroe scored the only goal for the Demon Deacons in the second half to tie up the match 1-1, but it wouldn't be enough to earn the victory.
The loss moves the Deacs to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC and the Cardinals improve to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the victory.
After a scoreless first half of action, Lotta Kahlert got things rolling for Louisville in the second half putting away her third goal of the season at the 47:53 mark to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. After Wake Forest goalkeeper Valerie Dahmen made an initial save off a shot from Alyssa Voelmle, Kahlert was there for the rebound.
Conroe then tied the match up several minutes later as her shot at the 51:11 mark knotted the score at 1-1. Madi Julius provided the pass that found Wangerin on the left side of the circle and she did the rest to tie up the score.
Both teams couldn't find a winner in regulation as the teams went into the extra period tied 1-1. Both teams had eight shots in regulation.
Just over five minutes into the overtime period, Garcia slotted home the winner as she took on Dahmen one-on-one to record her third goal of the season and a 2-1 win for the Louisville Cardinals.
Wake Forest returns to action Sunday as they host California in non-conference action. The match at Kentner Stadium begins at noon.
