WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Krysta Wangerin scored the game-winning goal in the second half as the No. 16-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team mounted a 2-1 comeback victory over the California Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
Jess Newak's goal late in the first half eliminated the Deacs' one-goal deficit, and Wangerin scored the winning goal early in the second half to earn the team an important victory at home after a loss on Friday to No. 11 Louisville.
The Demon Deacons improve to 7-4 overall with the win and the Golden Bears fall to 5-5 overall with the loss.
Cal struck first in the opening minutes off a goal from Andrea Earle, her fifth of the season. Lara Kruggel passed the ball from the left side of the circle and Earle redirected the pass into the cage from five yards out to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the 4:07 mark.
Following numerous opportunities after the visitor's early tally, Newak knotted up the score 1-1 just before the half. She took the ball near the top of the circle and dribbled past a defender before slotting home her fourth of the season at the 32:16 mark to tie the match 1-1.
Despite outshooting the Golden Bears 11-2 in the half, the match remained tied going into the break.
After several minutes into the second half, Wangerin put Wake Forest ahead 2-1 as she retrieved a ball inside the circle, eluded two defenders and slotted the ball into the right side of the cage at the 46:11 mark.
The Deacs would hold on for the victory over the Golden Bears at the end of regulation. Wake Forest outshot Cal 15-6 in the match but both teams were even at 4-4 with second half opportunities.
