EARLYSVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest's Samantha Jones and Cate Allen posted top-10 finishes to lead the Demon Deacons to a third-place finish at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Friday morning.
Jones, who came into the meet coming off two-straight individual titles to start the season, finished fifth in the 85-runner field. The junior from Randolph, N.J. finished the 6k course in 21:11.22, which was just five seconds off her winning pace at the Furman Classic on Sept. 13.
Allen, a freshman from Fairfield, Conn., was near her previous pace as well, finishing in 21:26.78 to take 10th overall at the meet. Allen has started her career with three-straight top-10 finishes.
Junior Kathleen Darling gave Wake Forest three runners in the top 15, as she placed 14th in 21:34.02.
The Deacons entered today's meet perfect on the season, having won team titles at both the Covered Bridge Open and the Furman Classic. Wake Forest suffered its first blemish today, but it came at the hands of two nationally-ranked squads in No. 10 Virginia and No. 26 William & Mary.
Meet host Virginia claimed the title with 37 points, while William & Mary was second with 74 points. Wake Forest finished with 94 points, edging out Arizona (95 points)--the sixth-ranked team in the West Region--for third.
Sophomore Ellie Abrahamson and senior Kaitlyn Oliver rounded out the Deacons' scoring five. Abrahamson was 29th in 22:23.02, while Oliver was 38th in 22:41.50.
Friday's meet served as a preview of the ACC Championships course. Virginia will host the conference meet in Earlysville on Oct. 31.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend at the Upstate Invitational on Oct. 4 in Spartanburg, S.C.
