WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team is ranked No. 60 in the latest 2014 ITA Rankings and has three players ranked in the Carolina Region heading into the spring season.
In the Carolina Regional rankings, sophomore Samantha Asch earned a No. 16 singles ranking and duo of Luisa Fernandez, and Kasey Gardiner are the No. 9-ranked doubles team.
The Demon Deacons return seven players from last year, including six lineup regulars from the squad that finished the 2013-14 season ranked No. 61 nationally. Asch finished the fall season with a 10-2 record in singles play. Her 10 singles victories tied a team-high. Gardiner had a 7-5 record during doubles while Fernandez went 2-3 in doubles. Karen Forman finished with nine singles victories and had a record of 9-4 in doubles.
Wake Forest also welcomes freshman newcomer Courtney Meredith to bolster the lineup. Meredith had a team-high 10 singles victories, which was tied with Asch, during the fall season and only lost one singles match.
The Deacs will play against 18 ranked teams of the 25 total opponents during the spring season. Wake Forest will compete against three of the top 10 teams and will play three ranked opponents in January.
Wake Forest will open dual match play at home on Jan. 19 with a doubleheader against College of Charleston and No. 62 Winthrop. The Demon Deacons host the Cougars at 10 a.m. and the Eagles at 3 p.m. at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
