WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Peyton Perea took a career-high six shots, but none of them found the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to No. 3 Virginia at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was Wake Forest's (4-9-2, 1-5 ACC) seventh by a one-goal margin, including the third in ACC play.
The Cavaliers (10-1-1, 4-1 ACC) scored an early goal and kept the Deacons off the board to earn the victory. At the 12:03 mark, an attempted clearance went right to Alexis Shaffer, who took a dribble and finished upper-90 from 15 yards.
Perea led the Demon Deacon attack with six of the team's nine shots, including two of the three shots on target. That tripled her previous career-high of two, set the last game against Virginia Tech.
Her best chance came just minutes into the second half. A cross was sent in by Kendall Fischlein in the 47th minute, but Perea's header towards an open net missed left.
Wake Forest had another opportunity in the 68th minute. Moments after subbing in, Kahla Seymour found her way behind the defense after a Sarah Teegarden through ball, but a defender recovered to knock it away as Seymour tried to corral her dribble.
The Cavaliers almost added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, but Nonie Frishette made a full-extension diving save on another Shaffer shot.
Frishette made four saves in the loss, while Morgan Stearns saved three shots in UVA's shutout victory.
Wake Forest wraps up the toughest portion of its schedule on Friday, traveling to top-10 Notre Dame for a 7 p.m. game. That will be Wake Forest's fifth against a top-10 foe in a six-game span.
