NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- No. 9-ranked Notre Dame controlled play for the first 80 minutes, holding on to beat Wake Forest, 1-0, at Alumni Stadium on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons (4-10-2, 1-6 ACC) picked up the offensive pressure in the closing 10 minutes, but the Fighting Irish (11-3-1, 4-3 ACC) defense kept Wake Forest off the board.
At the 35:03, a Wake Forest attempted clearance from the corner went right to Sabrina Flores in the middle of the field. Flores sent a through ball to Anna Gilbertson, who finished far post for what proved to be the game-winner.
Wake Forest was held without a shot for the first 67 minutes before Kendall Fischlein put an off-balance attempt on target.
The Deacs gained took control of possession in the final 10 minutes. Peyton Perea took a shot from 30 yards that missed wide, and Fischlein put a shot on target from 25 yards, saved by Notre Dame keeper Kaela Little.
Nonie Frishette played the first half, saving five of the six shots on goal she faced. Lindsay Preston made two saves on as many attempts in the second half.
The Fighting Irish led Wake Forest in shots (16-3), shots on goal (8-2) and corner kicks (10-1) in the contest.
Out of Wake Forest's 10 losses, eight have come by a one-goal margin.
Notre Dame was the fifth top-10 opponent Wake Forest has faced in the last six games. The Deacs close the season with a trio of unranked foes, beginning with Boston College on Oct. 22.
