RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (15-25, 27-25, 25-21, 27-25) decision at the hands of North Carolina State Friday night at Broughton High School's Holliday Gym. The Demon Deacons are now 9-6 on the season with a 1-2 mark in ACC play.
The home team has now won the last seven matches between the schools.
After overcoming an early 2-1 deficit, Wake Forest led for the remainder of the opening set. With a 15-14 lead established, the Demon Deacons went on a 10-1 run to secure a 25-15 win and a 1-0 overall lead.
Hanna Lee and Matalee Reed had four kills apiece in the set, hitting .800 and .571, respectively. Reed added three blocks, as well.
NC State rebounded in the second set after letting go of an early lead. The Deacs fell behind, 12-9, but rallied to earn leads of 17-13 and 22-19. The Wolfpack, however, took five of the next seven points to get to set point with a 24-23 advantage. Wake Forest negated two set points, but a Tanna Aljoe ace gave the home team a 27-25 victory.
Coming out of intermission with the match tied at one, the Demon Deacons again stormed back after trailing early, conceding four of the first five points before eventually gaining a 19-16 edge. The Pack heated up late again, though, finishing with a 9-2 run to triumph, 25-21, and take a 2-1 overall lead.
Down 18-16 in the fourth set, NCSU finished its first ACC win by nabbing three points in a row to seize a lead it would not relinquish. Wake Forest tied the score at 23, 24 and 25, but back-to-back kills by Blayke Hranicka and Morgan Cormier capped the match. The score was level a total of 15 times in the 27-25 fourth set.
Reed finished the night tying Hranicka for the match high in kills with 17. She and Hanna Lee also shared the team lead for total blocks with seven. Lee had five service aces and now has 11 in her last two matches to bring her 2015 total to a team-best 24.
Setter Sophia Dodd secured her third double-double of the year with 24 assists and 18 digs.
The Demon Deacons get right back to conference action Saturday at 5 p.m. with a road match against defending ACC champion North Carolina. The Deacs conclude a stretch of 15-straight matches in the state of North Carolina next week when they play host to Miami and nationally-ranked Florida State.
