WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team is tied for 12th after the opening round of the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall.
Duke leads the Landfall Tradition at 1-under while Oklahoma State is two strokes behind and the host-team UNC Wilmington is three strokes behind. The Demon Deacons turned in a 15-over 303 to sit tied for 12th with Ohio State and Elon.
"There were a lot of bright spots today but we couldn't get many putts to drop," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "Erica Herr demonstrated excellent mental toughness after making a triple on the first hole. She got back to 1-over with two birdies, then went back to 6-over before finishing 2-over. She hung in there and was fighting the entire time. Jennifer Kupcho was very steady today with 16 pars and 2 bogies. She had a lot of makeable birdie chances but did not convert. She is on the verge of breaking through with a super round. We still need more consistency as a team and an under par round each day. We are capable and I know the students are giving their best effort."
Freshman Jennifer Kupcho and sophomore Erica Herr both turned in rounds of 2-over 74 to lead the Demon Deacons. They are tied for 28th in the individual standings.
Freshman Ines Laklalech finished with a 77 on Friday and freshman Antonia Eberhard carded a 78. Junior Sierra Sims finished with a 79.
Senior Mariana Sims competed as an individual and turned in the best round of any Deacon with a 1-over 73. She is tied for 21st.
Wake Forest is paired with Virginia and South Carolina for Saturday's second round. They will tee off beginning at 10:09 a.m.
