Wake Forest Defeated by Pitt in Three Sets

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team came up short against Pittsburgh, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17), at Reynolds Gymnasium Saturday evening. All three sets were evenly matched, but the Panthers were able to pull away toward the end in each of them.
The defeat dropped the Demon Deacons to 10-12 on the season. Their ACC record dipped to 2-8.
The teams went back and forth in the opening set, playing to ties of 1-1, 2-2, 4-4 and 8-8 before the Panthers took the lead for good. The Deacs pulled to within one point three times, but Pitt opened up a five-point lead at 20-15 before going on to win, 25-19.
Pitt took a 2-0 lead going into intermission with a 25-21 victory in the second frame. The set was tied on 14 different occasions, but with the score knotted at 18, the Panthers scored three-straight points to give them a cushion that would allow them to take a 2-0 overall lead in the match.
The Demon Deacons led early in the third set, but Pitt reeled off a 10-3 run to gain a 19-13 edge. The Panthers continued to build upon their lead until Kadi Kullerkann used her match-best 16th kill to seal her team's 3-0 victory with a 25-17 third-set triumph.
Kylie Long led the Deacs with 14 kills on a .480 hitting percentage, while Caroline Wolf registered 16 digs to eclipse the 900-dig plateau for her career.
The Panthers outhit the Deacons .442-.221 on the night.
Wake Forest resumes play Wednesday night against Duke before hitting the road for a Friday match against Virginia.
