WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With the 2015 WNBA season in the books, former Wake Forest women's basketball player Dearica Hamby has completed her rookie season with the San Antonio Stars.
Drafted sixth overall by San Antonio back in April, Hamby appeared in 31 of the Stars' 34 games this season, missing three games due to injury. Throughout the year, Hamby posted 6.1 points per game with 4.1 rebounds per contest while making 16 starts. Averaging 17.4 minutes per game, the former Deac shot 35.4 percent from the floor, including 35.3 percent from long range.
Hamby's career got off to a fast start, as she scored in double digits four of her first five games. She scored a career-high 19 points on July 2 against the Los Angeles Sparks and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds just three games prior in San Antonio's first win of the season on June 25 against Phoenix. Hamby finished her rookie campaign with a bang on Sept. 13 as the Stars topped Seattle 59-58 thanks to Hamby's 15-point performance that included a three-point play with 3:41 to play. Hamby then went on to have the assist on the three-pointer by Danielle Adams that gave the Stars the lead with 1:51 to play.
In mid-July, Hamby was drafted by the KB Stars in the WKBL Korean Draft. While 85 players applied for the draft, Hamby was one of the 12 players selected. She is currently playing in Cheongui, South Korea. The WBKL started late in October and runs through March. The KB Stars' first game is set for 2 p.m. (1 a.m. ET) on Nov. 1 against the S-Birds.
While at Wake Forest, Hamby rewrote the women's basketball record book in becoming the program's all-time leading scorer (1,801 points) and rebounder (1,021 rebounds). She was also the first Deacon to be named first team All-ACC twice in her career. She earned All-America honorable mention honors from both the WBCA and Associated Press last season and became the first player in Wake Forest history to be selected in the WNBA Draft.
Back at home, Wake Forest will open the post-Hamby era on Friday, Nov. 13, inside the LJVM Coliseum against LSU. Opening tip is set for 5 p.m. and the game will be followed by the Demon Deacons' men's basketball team opening its season at 8 p.m. against UMBC.
