LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Coming off the heels of a third-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet, Wake Forest senior cross country runner Samantha Jones was named individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. this Saturday.
The women's 6k race will begin at noon.
A two-time All-ACC honoree after finishing sixth at the conference meet on Oct. 30, Jones' 20:35.3 time at last week's regional meet at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. made her the first Demon Deacon to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Anna Nosenko in 2010.
Nosenko finished 63rd with a 6k time of 21:04.5 at the race in Terre Haute, Ind.
Jones is the lone individual qualifier from the ACC. Virginia, Notre Dame, Syracuse and NC State qualified as teams.
Also qualifying from the Southeast Region were Letitia Saayman of Coastal Carolina, Allie Buchalski of Furman, Ednah Kurgat of Liberty and Regan Rome of William & Mary.
The race will be Jones' sixth of the season. She has led the Deacs in all five of her appearances in 2015 and has finished no worse than sixth overall in any of them.
The last time Jones ran at Tom Sawyer State Park was in last year's NCAA Southeast Regional. She led the Deacs to a ninth-place finish in a 38-team field by coming in 34th with a 6k time of 21:08.4. The Randolph, N.J. native's best 6k time of this year was 20:22.5 at the ACC Championships.
