LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Competing as an individual qualifier, Wake Forest senior cross country runner Samantha Jones capped her collegiate cross country career with a 34th-place finish in a 254-runner field at the NCAA Championships at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday.
She earned All-American status by finishing in the top 40.
Jones' finish was the best by a Demon Deacon at the NCAA Championships since the team last had an All-American in 2006. That year, Michelle Sikes crossed the finish line in 15th, helping guide the team to a 27th-place finish.
The Randolph, N.J. native's time in the 6k race was 20:22.5, a 45.7-second improvement on her last race at Tom Sawyer State Park in last year's NCAA Southeast Regional. She was in 43rd place at the 2000m and 4000m marks before a late-race surge made her the school's eighth women's cross country All-American.
A two-time All-ACC honoree after finishing sixth at the conference meet on Oct. 30, Jones became the first Deacon to qualify for a national championship since Anna Nosenko in 2010. Nosenko finished 63rd with a 6k time of 21:04.5 at the race in Terre Haute, Ind.
A third-place, all-region showing at last week's NCAA Southeast Regional at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va. gave Jones the opportunity to run in Saturday's meet.
Notre Dame senior Molly Seidel won the race with a time of 19:28.6, while top-ranked New Mexico ran away with the team title, posting a team score of 49--the top five Lobos finished 17th or better. Jones was the third ACC runner to complete the course behind Seidel and Anna Rohrer, also of the Fighting Irish.
Saturday's meet marked the end of the NCAA cross country season. Wake Forest kicks off its indoor track season on Dec. 5 at the JDL College Kick-Off Classic in Winston-Salem.
