WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor season by competing in the JDL College Kick-Off Classic at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
Eight of the Demon Deacons' 18 competitors posted top-five finishes, while three Deacs registered first-place finishes.
Wake Forest found its most success in the weight throw competitions, as Charlie Ionata won the men's event and Alva Hicks won the women's event. Ionata had a personal-best throw of 19.37m to win the competition, while Hicks, a freshman, took first and broke the school record with a throw of 18.13m in her debut in Old Gold and Black.
Hicks broke Lindsay Neuberger's Deacon record set in 2007 of 17.55m with a 17.61m throw before going on to outdo herself at 18.13.
Also winning his event in his collegiate debut was Robert Heppenstall, who ran a 4:13.53 mile. Three spots behind him in fourth was fellow Deacon Andrew Fea, who had a time of 4:26.40.
The remainder of the Demon Deacons' top-five finishes came in the 1000m races as both the men's and women's teams had the second- and third-place finishers. For the men, John Archie came in second, followed by Henry West. On the women's side, Caitlin Krol crossed the finish line less than a half second behind second-place teammate Lara-Ann Schwede.
In addition to Hicks and Heppenstall, Joseph Gorsche, Dylan Heraghty, Jonathan Dixon IV, Frank Ahearn and Sarah Johnson also competed for Wake Forest for the first time.
Johnson paced the Deacs in the 300m with a sixth-place finish with a time of 41.10.
The Demon Deacons will not compete until Jan. 16 when they host the Wake Forest Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. The JDL Combined Events will take place on Jan. 17 and 18.
