Deacons Place Eight on All-ACC Academic Cross Country Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Samantha Jones, Catherine Allen, and Kathleen Darling of the Wake Forest women's cross country team, and Alexander Rose, Connor Crowley, Jacob Poyner, Kyle Graves, and Kent Garrett of the men's squad, were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams as announced Thursday afternoon by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during their academic career. The awards are for the 2013 fall cross country season.

Rose, a native of Brisbane, Australia and finance major, earned his third-career All-ACC Academic Team selection. During his senior season, Rose earned a top-10 finish individually at the Upstate Invitational helping Wake Forest finish in first place. He also helped his team earn a first place finish at the Covered Bridge Open and top-five finishes at the Furman Classic, Blue Ridge Open and the Royals Challenge. The Demon Deacons finished 11th as a team at the 2014 ACC Championships.

Crowley and Poyner each received the All-Academic honors for the second time in their careers. Both recorded several top finishes during the fall season. Both competed in seven events during the 2014 season. Both runners earned top-10 finishes at the Upstate Invitational and the Blue Ridge Open.

Garrett and Graves earned their first-career All-ACC Academic honors. Garrett had a season-best first place finish at the Covered Blue Ridge while Graves had a season-best third place finish. Garrett also had a second place finish at the Upstate Invitational and both competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional.

Jones, a communication major, received her second honor in her career. She finished 2014 with three first place finishes at the Covered Bridge Open, Furman Classic, and Royals Challenge, while also earning a top-five finish at the Virginia Invitational. She finished in 21st at the ACC Championships as her team finished in ninth place.

Allen and Darling are first-time All-ACC Academic Team selections for the 2014 season. Allen finished with four top-five finishes including a second place finish at the Furman Classic. Darling had three top-five finishes with a season-best second place finish at Royals Challenge.
